The FIRST Robotics Competition has been around since 1989 and was founded by inventor Dean Kamen. FIRST is an acronym meaning For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The aim of the competition is to teach young students about engineering, software development, teamwork and leadership; eventually inspiring them to pursue a career in engineering. FIRST is an international competition involving more than 19,000 teams and 214,000 students throughout the world.
